26/03/2007 Motion Computing LE1700 Tablet PCGottaBeMobile posted an InkShow on the newly announced Motion Computing LE1700 Tablet PC. The updated slate has an option for a dual mode digitizer, which would allow you to switch between using a pen to write or using your finger to tap commands. I really enjoy using slates during my daily work. I used an LE1600 for quite some time and actually just turned the one I had been using in the other day. It's great to see models continue to be updated! In fact, the LE1600 topped the list as one of my favorite Tablet PCs. (Yes, I have favorites too.) I only had 1 issue with the LE1600 and it was all because I lost the little cover for the dock connector. A couple times when I was rushing, the little clips caught threads on my sweaters and pulled. Because I used the dock regularly I never wanted to replace the cover. I'm the only one I know who has run into this issue. It's probably not a big deal with men's oxfords or polo shirts. Talk about an extremely minor issue - and the benefits of the LE1600 certainly outweighted it!
Go UMPCs!It's great to see another Microsoft UMPC team member step out and blog about the product. Welcome, Vikram Madan! He's already jumped in full force, as you can see by his clever drawings. Subscribed. HTC brings UMPC a step closer to "always connected" with integrated 3GToday at CTIA, HTC announced its new UMPC: HTC Shift. The HTC Shift is one step closer to that "always connected" scenario that we've all wanted, as it has integrated 3G plus Windows Vista Business. Here are the specs:
Available this summer. More info >> Whatisnew getting back up & runningAfter much discussion, we've decided to take Whatisnew.com in the direction we always intended - a central location for many of the TuxReports network sites. The building just started and it's going to take a while to get anywhere where we want. But afterall, Whatisnew.com is 11 years old and has gone through several different styles already. Thanks for your patience!
25/03/2007 Converging expectationsAs a class of ultra-portable PCs continues to emerge and popularity of cellphones filled with do-dads increases, there will be an expected set of features in these u-class PCs that "should" be for free. For example, someone was just commenting to me about how they expect all UMPCs moving forward will have a webcamera built-in because all cellphones have them today, afterall. The underlying message is that because it's already a standard on one class of products that you shouldn't have to pay a premium to get it PCs that should have even more functions. I hear comments like these frequently and the rate is increasing (hopefully, not faster than manufacturers making these adjustments).
What are the other features do you think this is already happening with?
What technologies do you think will be commoditized in the midterm? Longterm? Change the question slightly and what emerging technology in cell phones do you think will impact u-class PCs the most? What about the multitouch digitizer on the upcoming Apple iPhone? Where'd that OneNote note go?I'm a big OneNote user. But I frequently mumble to myself, "Where'd that note go that I wrote the other day?" I can remember the exact moment when and where I wrote notes, but I either used an extremely popular keyword or don't take the time to think of another more distinctive keyword for search and end up searching through sections manually.
Josh Einstein showed me his OneNote Calendar. It's a click once app. Installs in just a few moments. Very cool, Josh. Thank you for doing this!
P.S. I'll get it listed on TabletPCPost.com tomorrow. 24/03/2007 Attention developers: Win a Samsung Q1 Ultra-Mobile PCCode Project is an extremely active developer community site with projects and samples galore. Is this app really for me?Microsoft is hosting an ISV partner webcast series focused on software applications with mobile PC features. SmartDraw is going to kick off the series on Monday, demonstrating how you can use it on a Tablet PC.
Upcoming conferencesI'll be attending several conferences in the next few months:
Each of these conferences has a slightly different focus, but my interest has to do with helping people learn about advancements in mobile PC technology and how these changes can improve the way they use PCs at work, home, or school. Are you attending any of these conferences? Redesigning websitesThe server that Whatinsew.com was hosted on was attacked, so Layne moved it off the server and onto a new server. However, we can't get to any of the old content off the old server yet. So temporarily he's gone back to software that we used a couple years ago, which yields much better search engine optimization results, and we'll see what we can do to rebuild. I've downloaded beta versions of Microsoft Expression, Blend, and Design to see what we can come up with. I'd like a little flair. 21/03/2007 Keeping in touch"Keep in touch," is a phrase I frequently sign in an email to my friends. Particularly since last week's Microsoft MVP summit, the phrase keeps going through my mind in respect to Touch technology on Tablet PCs and Ultra-Mobile PCs. Keep in touch with friends. Keep in touch with family. Your UMPC will help you keep in touch any time, any place.
These ultra-portable PCs are more friendly now than ever before, as many new Tablet PCs and all UMPCs use touch. Now that I can reach out and tap the screen with my finger I can drill through commands, move windows around, and still switch to a pen when I want to write. This isn't the old Point of Sale monitor that restaurants and retail stores use. This touch is personal and portable. I like this feature so much that I absolutely don't want to lose it on a PC -- instead, I want to use it on every PC. Where before I would walk up to someone's monitor and point with the pen, now I share my fingerprints with them as I tap their screen with my finger. |
